You have control over a lot of what happens on your wedding day, from what you wear to the dishes you serve your guests. What you don’t have control over, though, is what goes on in the sky. You might be able to assume it will be reasonably warm in the summer and colder in the winter, but you never know when it will suddenly start to rain! That’s why knowing how to manage poor weather conditions in advance is key, so here are five top tips for doing just that.
1. Avoid the Weather Altogether with an Indoor Venue
The first tip is pretty straightforward: look at wedding venues that let you stay inside for most of the day. If the thought of rain, wind, or storms interrupting your wedding makes you very nervous, booking avenue where the weather can’t ruin anything will give you peace of mind. Keep in mind that many of the best wedding venues cater to all types of weather. So, if it’s hot outside, the venue should have AC to keep it cool. If it’s cold and wet, there’ll be plenty of heating to keep things comfortable.
2. Have a Backup Plan for Poor Weather
Do not assume that the weather will be fine, even if your wedding date is in the middle of July. Always have a backup plan for bad weather. This plan should consider things like:
- Indoor lighting for photographs
- Switching the ceremony to inside
- Providing shelter
3. Provide Essentials for Guest Comfort
You naturally want your guests to be as comfortable as possible on your wedding day, and you can do this by providing wet-weather essentials. For example, offering umbrellas and towels will help your guests stay dry, while portable heaters and blankets will ensure everyone stays warm no matter what the temperature is like outdoors.
4. Ensure Your Hair and Makeup are Waterproof
The last thing you want on your wedding day is to have your eye makeup streaming down your face or your hairstyle undone because of extreme weather. To avoid this, speak with your hair and makeup artist prior to the wedding about ensuring it is completely waterproof. Of course, then, on the wedding day, try to keep your face and hair dry even if it’s raining!
5. Inform Your Guests as Soon as You Know the Weather
Most wedding planners will understand the incessant need to keep on checking the weather report in the weeks and days running up to the big day. When you actually have an idea of the weather (a couple of days before), inform your guests of what to expect, especially if there will be cold temperatures or rain. That way, your guests can prepare for the weather beforehand and then get to enjoy the wedding as it comes, rain or shine.
No couple should ever let poor weather ruin their wedding. In fact, bad weather can even sometimes make for a more interesting backdrop! By being prepared with the five tips above, you can focus on enjoying tying the knot and not on something out of your control.

Hi, I’m Mathilde Lacombe — a lifestyle and beauty blogger based in New York City. I have been writing about beauty, skincare, fashion, health, and women’s everyday life for nearly eight years. I hold a Master’s degree in Arts & Humanities from Pace University, New York, which shaped the way I research, analyse, and write about every topic I cover here.
I started this blog because I wanted a space for honest, well-researched content, not recycled advice or paid promotions dressed up as genuine recommendations. Everything I publish starts with research and ends with a real opinion.
